Surfing the Indian Ocean on the beaches of Durban

The waves may be mightier around the cape area of South Africa, but Durban, with its location on the warm and mighty Ocean, will be the ideal spot for swimming in May possibly and June.

This city has been grooming its waterfront in anticipation of tens of thousands of tourists arriving for the World Cup. Durban will be the surfing capital of South Africa. I haven’t been on a board since, well, the ’70s. Figured it was time to give it a go again. Moses at the Elangeni Hotel set this dude up.

“Want a huge board or a modest board,” Moses asked.

Huge board is simpler to ride; small board is less likely to kill me.

“Small board.”

Moses took me to a back room exactly where he brought out the beast. I carried it down to the surf, exactly where I was grand entertainment for two kids watching me fail miserably. By about the 20th attempt, I stood on the board for all of three seconds. Done.
