Question by neb_sixteen: What are some great techniques to Surf/pier fish the Atlantic ocean in southern Maine?
Im looking to catch my very first saltwater fish… The climate forecast calls for 70s and sunny all full week. Hunting to fish from the piers/surf in the Wells and Ogunquit region. Any suggestions as far as bait, techniques, periods of day, etc would be enormously appreciated. I am not familiar with saltwater fish AT ALL, and am not heading for anything at all in certain. I practice catch and release, and the larger the fish the superior!

Query by gemma_ginx: What to use in the course of a very first time surf lesson?
I’m going to Hawaii in 1 week and want to just take a surf lesson. I’ve by no means surfed in my everyday life! Just pondering, should I invest in some surf outfits to put on Previous to i go to hawaii, or do they provide attire in the course of these lesson? (of course I have a bathing fit, but I’m assuming I have to have 1 of these surf shifts or board shorts?)
I’m a lady by the way:) Any aid?

Usually you want to wear board shorts or a bikini bottom with no pockets and you want to wear a rash guard. You can also wear a one piece swimsuit and a rash guard over top. You can buy those at any local surf shop or online. If the water is cool ( depending on the year ) you might want to wear a spring suit or a full wetsuit. It all depends on the weather conditions and the temp of the water. If you know that ahead of time then your better off for picking what you need to wear.
-Rash Guard
-One piece Swimsuit
-Bikini Bottom
-Spring Suit
-Wet Suit
My suggestion would normally be to see what your instructor is wearing, and try to come as close as possible to that, without totally copying him/her. Just wait until you get there, scope out the instructors, THEN buy your gear. It’ll probably save you a pile of money on guesswork too.
Depends on whether you ask the surf instructor or the student! Ha ha. The water is fairly warm in Hawaii, so a bathing suit will suffice. You will want to make sure it a good fitting bathing suit and will hold while going throughthe waves. A lycra rash guard top would be a safe bet if you’re worried about your top shifting around. Also, the rash guard would help prevent any chaffing from the abrasive surface of the board (wax, sand, ect.).
You could wear different things while surfing. Since it is your first time and you will be taking lessons then the instructor may provided you with a wet suit. If he does not I would recommend wear board shorts/bikini bottom (normal bating suit trunks/bikini bottom should be fine on your first time surfing). But I do recommend getting a rash guard because when you are learning the Pop-up in surfing you can get a rash from rubbing your upper body along the board in attempts to stand up (you can buy a rash guard almost at any surf shop or beach supplier store). If it is only your first time surfing don’t go and invest in a wet suit of your own right away wait till after your lesson to see how much you enjoy surfing ( they can be expensive) all so take into account how often you will be going surfing (there is no need to buy an expensive wet suit if you will not be surfing too often).
yeah a rashguard or ride shirt will help, just to keep the sun off you so you won’t have to use as much sunblock. if you can buy your swimmies before you go you’ll avoid getting nailed price wise, plus a lot of 08 stuff is on sale right now so you’ll get a decent deal.
usually the only thing they’ll provide is the board and the instructor, I also suggest getting womens boardshorts, it might be a little more comfortable and you wont have to worry so much about losing a piece of your swimsuit if you happen to take a hard fall.

if you have not been to manado, indonesia, you might want to give it a try. great waves and laid back cosmopolitan surfer community. also cheap. it is located on the northern end of sulawesi island. just google manado for more info.
Bell’s Beach, Victoria
Byron Bay, NSW
You can’t go wrong!!
Go to Hawaii, they have the best waves, or go to the Gold Coast in Australia (I think that is good) but there is one here in Oz that I know is good, it might not be Gold Coast, but avoid Bondi in Sydney, there is way to many people there for surfing. Unless you get up really early.
Gunnamatta in Victoria Australia
SOUTH AFRICA. If have the choice between the warm waters of Durban or the big waves but cold water of the Western Cape, plus u can dive with sharks or even see a great white up close in personal through cage. Best of all its cheap 1£ will get u 16 south african rands.
El Salvador – small country but its all coast line
Uses US dollar so changing money is easy.
Check this out http://www.puntamango.com/
I have personally surfed there and the waves are awsome
same great weather year round – only thing that changes is either it rains or it doesn’t
Okay, this will get a laugh from the Californians and Hawaiians out there: Atlantic City New jersey. There are great hotels and restaurants and some under appreciated breaks, like States Avenue. Not to mention, an hour either north or south on the Garden State parkway, and you can be surfing in Cape May or Long Beach island. You can gamble, eat, drink and surf all in one day. It’s not real expensive by American standards, and most of the people (not including the eastern european waiters and waitresses) speak almost the same language as you do. It’s not exotic, but its relatively free from terrorist bombings. It’s big downside is that it’s COLD in the winter. And, because of typically inconsistent east coast surf, you might have ti drive around awhile to find a break that’s on.
mundaka spain, or hosengor france are world class beach breaks and easy travel from UK. Or just get those booties out and hit up ireland.
