Question by Justin H: What’s the most effective way to block workers from browsing the World-wide-web on a small business personal computer?
I have two home business personal computers that require to have web accessibility for emailing reviews and for remote management, but I want to make certain personnel are not goofing about on-line whilst operating. So what’s the ideal strategy for blocking net browsing? For what it’s value, both pcs have Windows XP Qualified.
I don’t want to completely block surfing since I do want to be capable to entry a handful of web pages that relate to our business.
For what I’m attempting to do, would a content filter like Web Nanny be my most effective selection? What other solutions do I have and would any be greater than a material filter?
Louise H: previous to you start thinking I’m a terrible human being, understand that if the employees are working with these personal computers – except for at rather distinct periods – it indicates they are away from the place they are supposed to be doing work. It’s not like these personal computers are terminals where by the personnel are normally working and I’m just restricting access. In addition, I presently know that offered the possibility the personnel will be using these pcs fairly than performing their function for the reason that I have caught them taking part in games on the computer system when they had been intended to be performing other factors.

Did you see the $ 62 thousand dollar bill one man got for downloading a movie file using his cell phone? Might want to be careful
Pros U Can surf Anywhere and everywhere
Cons Small Screen and Expensive
I don’t really care about the pros because they are always to our advantage, I really worry about the cons ,I just read this article and it says that if there is a power outage it will loose connection and the other is that it would limit or make it impossible to be reached or reach someone in case of an emergency , unless they will come up with something a little better in that perspective I would not consider it .

I agree with vakko’s post, the screen is small requiring a lot of scrolling to read text.
…Hey, Brian….Ok, well some of the “advantages” are that: You can go online virtually anywhere; that You can check Your Emails (anytime without actually going onto the Computer); and You can usually send/respond with basic text messages…”Disadvantages” are that: You are quite limited (in most cases), to what type of Text, You use; NO Spell-Checking (in most cases); You will have difficulty going online to many sites (including most any Pen-Pal sites Etc.); & You will not be able to check “offline” messages; nor will You be able to IM (unless You pay extra for that privilege)…Hope that this has helped You…
Pros; freedom to surf outside the home, research anything anytime anywhere. Cons; surfing can be distrating. can cause trafic accidents if surfing in your car.
Unless you get a good subscription plan, they are damned expensive.
If both the computers are networked then install a proxy server. In the proxy server you can ‘blacklist’ websites preventing users from accessing them or include specific sites in the ‘whitelist’
Justin! That is so mean. Do you also monitor their phone calls? and forbid them from talking to each other on company time?
Why don’t you just tell them that you don’t want them to goof around online while working and then trust them to do the right thing.
I find that if I treat my staff with respect and as adults they respond by working harder and are more loyal.
Of course there’s always the risk that if you give an inch they’ll take a mile, but If it ever turns out that they have then it’s disciplinary matter.
