Question by Yvonne: What measurement surf board is best for a newbie?
I’m 40 several years previous and exploring craiglist for a surf board. I’ve never surfed before and I’m not confident what dimensions of board I will need. I’m 5’4 if that even matters. I will be surfing in San Diego location, would I need to have a wetsuit or a summer season match? Do I want booties? Thank you.

Don’t waste your time searching for a surfboard on craig’s list. If you don’t know nearly anything about surfing (as witnessed by your asking a question in this forum) you will only purchase one thing that is disappointing. Lessons are the only wise way to start surfing, either from a professional instructor, or browsing family members or pals who are veteran surfers. There are way too numerous harmful people today in the drinking water now, who Believe they can surf. Please don’t join their ranks. The Extremely Final Matter the rest of us experienced surfers want is people to get silly on-line guidance, and go down to the seashore, seize a surfboard, and go out and get in our way.
Most people today start out most effective on extended boards, but I have seen a good deal of surfers start commence with a short board and master it in no time. It just tends to be additional challenging. The bottom line is there are NO Guidelines as to what type of surfboard you understand on. Obviously a longboard commonly is much more consumer pleasant.
Most specialist instructors will rent you a board to master on. Newcomers shouldn’t even imagine about getting a board right until they master the basics, and decide they truly want to maintain on surfing.
As far as what form/siz surfboard. this query comes up a great deal on YA Surfing, and it is not possible to reply it accurately on-line. While I am confident you will get plenty of ”advice” the true Most effective Reply is to go to a superior nearby surf store and focus on your talent level, your measurement (excess fat issues, top is rather irrelevant) and neighborhood wave disorders with the folks there. they will give you considerably far better data than Anybody out right here in cyberspace. When you are finally prepared, you must truly imagine about buying a respectable board, and preventing popouts , and boards made in sweat shops in China, except if that’s just all you can manage. And don’t forget, there are usually employed boards for sale in just about every surf shop. Following practically 43 a long time of browsing, I nonetheless get my surfboard purchasing assistance at excellent local outlets in the areas the place I surf.
Lot’s of good teenagers will consider to give you all sorts of ’advice’ on what to purchase, but rely on me, this is not the way to get precise information. Browsing is way too substantially enjoyable not to get the time to find out the ’right way.” and suerfboards are significantly to pricey to take silly on line information about. The h2o temperature in san Diego is in the very low 60s, whihc for me is spring match time, but that is a make a difference of private choice and how properly you tolerate the cold. It’s an additional excellent question to inquire in a San Diego place surf shop, as an alternative of on-line. Go to a good surf shop, and good luck!

Question by gkarl3rd: What are individuals tiny mollusks in the surf?
Okay, I’ve experienced them when this summer season in the surf at Ocean City, MD. They are small clam like mollusks, about half the dimension of your pinkie fingernail. They are both white shelled or often purple shelled. You can see them at the surf line. When the foam recedes into the ocean, they’ll be exposed as the loose sand washes again into the ocean. They immediately dig into the sand and disappear, only to reappear with the following wave.
Anybody know what they are?

That time of the year you are likely going to be looking at striped bass and blue fish. You could also be looking at some fluke, kingfish, dogfish, sea robins and a few others. Stripers and blues are what you would probably want to target.
Striped bass
Northern kingfish
Bluefish
Weakfish
Drum
Fluke, but the season closed on 9/4
Tautog
Croaker
Shark
thats the fall run for Stripers and that’s mostly what you’ll be catching, cape may is a great place for striper fishing…the local bait shop will set you with bait (usually mackeral and sand eeels)..you should also try fishing off a pier as the tide is coming in
i would use an 8ft rod, spooled w 17lbs test,
can catch, striped bass, bluefish, weakfish, sea bass, black fish.
can use tins, plugs,plastic worms.
for bait, try bunker, clams, green crabs, fiddler crabs, sandworms, squid&sand eels.
search the yellow pages online, look for cape may nj, the browse tackle shops& give em a call
If you are in San Diego and plan to surf in the summer, a 3/2 wetsuit will do you well. If you plan to surf in other seasons You’ll need a 4/3. You wont need booties, San Diego is one of the warmest spots you can surf in California.
I suggest getting a longboard, make sure it’s in good condition.

I feel sorry for John F. It sucks having to tell people the same thing everyday on Yahoo Answers.
1) Learn on a long board (<10') with not much rocker, at your age it's easier to paddle and stand up on. Get use to the board, if no more surf get out and paddle to build up your strength and stamina. Always keep your feet together when paddling, most rookies start out paddling with their legs "spread eagle"
2) You don't need to pay for lessons, you can learn by watching other surfers and "just doing it". Start off close to shore, on the inside waves or on the shoulder. Ask surfers questions on the beach or in the water. Most will be glad to help. At least, that's how it is in my neck off the woods.
go with an 8ft foam longboard, BEST for beginners
for san diego summer u shuld probly get a 3/2 wetsuit (long or spring suit), or just go with boardshorts and a rashgaurd
willis bros surf school is a really good place to learn, and they have 8ft foam boards for u to use
booties are only needed in the winter, but u dont really need them then
4/3 is gud for winter too, unless u dont mind the cold
Nah i wouldn’t even start surfing sucks
A small ear-shaped shellfish sits on the ocean floor. Bubbles rise out of tiny breathing holes lining its rugged outer shell. The muscular foot is securely anchored to an ocean rock, while its slender tentacles wave gently in the salty water. The animal is small and likely to go unnoticed, except that its coarse exterior conceals valuable meat and a luminous inner shell, making it a prize catch.
